Background: SAFALs objective is to provide more fish products and higher income from sustainable and resource-efficient pond-based aquaculture for the food-insecure population in Assam and Odisha. The module promotes availability and access to fish as a nutrient-rich food, contributing to Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 2 (zero hunger). The module also contributes to SDG 1 (no poverty) through productivity enhancement activities, improved business skills and promotion of income-generating activities. Target groups are small-scale fish producers, Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs), multipliers and policy-makers. The political partner is the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying (MoFAHD), Government of India.
The new module of the GP Fish in India will support small farmers, public and private service providers (Aquaculture Service Providers, ASPs) and other actors in the value chain (e.g. hatcheries, feed producers, fish traders) in the states of Assam and Odisha.
Key outputs are increased production of fish from sustainable aquaculture and the associated increase in income and demand for labour. The political and institutional framework conditions for the implementation of sustainable and resource-saving aquaculture shall be improved. The project duration is from 05/ 2021 to 05/2024.
Objectives: The objective is to implementation of the Participatory Guarantee System in freshwater sustainable aquaculture in line with agroecological principles via ensuring participatory review of existing standards, approval of new standard by PGS India, supply chain management and ensuring certification of the product via operationalizing organisation system for FPO under PGS. Furthermore, selection and training of 20 CPR (community resource person) and 10 CRP trainers who can then train 500 farmers as multipliers. Finally, the selection and incubation of 50 entrepreneurs in line with agroecological principles to boost the entire aquaculture value chain of the block within the FPO system.
